When Should You Book Newborn Portraits?

Portrait planning advice from Matt & Shea Photography

The easiest time to plan newborn portraits is usually before the baby arrives. Reserving during pregnancy gives the studio a due-date window, gives parents time to ask questions and removes one decision from the first sleep-deprived days at home.

Reserve during pregnancy

A due date is a planning point, not an appointment the baby must keep. Contacting the studio during the second or third trimester allows everyone to note the expected window and discuss siblings, special considerations and the kinds of portraits or artwork you love.

After birth, the actual session date can be finalized based on recovery, baby’s arrival and the studio calendar. Families expecting multiples or facing a planned delivery should share that information early.

Why 7–14 days is often recommended

Many newborns are sleepier and naturally curl into womb-like positions during the first two weeks, which can make this window well suited to classic newborn imagery. It is a preference, not a deadline that determines whether beautiful portraits are possible.

Matt & Shea Photography can photograph newborns beyond two weeks—and often up to about two months—with expectations adapted to the baby’s age, alertness and comfort. Older newborns may offer more eye contact, stretches and personality.

If baby arrives early or late

This is exactly why planning around a due-date window is useful. Notify the studio when baby arrives, and communicate any medical or recovery needs. The timeline should serve the family, not add pressure.

Sessions are generally scheduled Tuesday through Friday in the morning, when many newborns are most settled. Review the full Newborn Experience so you know what the studio provides and what to expect.

Prepare the people, not a Pinterest checklist

Share who will participate, including parents and siblings. Keep clothing soft, simple and coordinated. Bring feeding supplies, diapers and any essential comfort items. If you have one meaningful heirloom, ask whether it can be incorporated safely.

You do not need to purchase a collection of props. A professional newborn studio plans light, support, wrapping and pacing around the baby. See finished work in the newborn portfolio.

Frequently asked questions

Is two weeks too late for newborn photos?

No. The first 7–14 days are often ideal for sleepy curled poses, but beautiful baby-led portraits can be created later with age-appropriate expectations.

What if we do not know the exact birth date?

Reserve using the due date as a window, then contact the studio after delivery to finalize timing.
