Maternity Photography FAQ
When should I schedule maternity portraits?
Many maternity sessions are photographed during the third trimester, often around 28 to 34 weeks, when your baby bump is well defined but you may still feel comfortable enough for a portrait session. Every pregnancy is different, so we can help determine timing based on your due date, comfort and circumstances.
When should I reserve my maternity session?
We recommend reserving during your second trimester whenever possible. Booking early gives us more flexibility with dates, planning, wardrobe and outdoor seasonal considerations.
Do you offer studio and outdoor maternity photography?
Yes. We offer both studio and outdoor maternity portrait options. Studio sessions provide a controlled, polished environment, while outdoor sessions use natural scenery and light for a more environmental look.
What should I wear for maternity photos?
We help you plan clothing based on your style and selected experience. Dresses, fitted silhouettes, flowing fabrics and simple pieces can all photograph beautifully. The goal is to highlight your shape without making you feel like you are wearing someone else's personality.
Do you provide maternity gowns?
Wardrobe options can vary, so we recommend discussing styling with us while planning your session. We will help you determine what is available and what you may want to bring.
Can my partner be included?
Yes. Partner portraits can be incorporated depending on your selected maternity experience. These photographs help tell the story of the family waiting for your baby's arrival.
Can our children be included?
Yes. Siblings-to-be can often be included. We will plan those portraits around their ages and personalities because toddlers, as history has repeatedly demonstrated, do not care about photography schedules.
Do you help with posing?
Absolutely. You do not need modeling experience. We guide body position, hands, posture and expression throughout the session to create flattering portraits while keeping you comfortable.
What if I feel uncomfortable or self-conscious?
That is completely normal. Pregnancy changes your body quickly, and not everyone arrives feeling camera-ready. Our job is to guide lighting, posing and angles while creating an experience that helps you feel comfortable and confident.
Where do outdoor maternity sessions take place?
We photograph throughout the Chattanooga area and help select locations based on season, accessibility, scenery and the style you want.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Outdoor maternity sessions may need to be rescheduled when weather would negatively affect safety, comfort or the finished portraits. Studio maternity sessions remove weather from the equation entirely.
When will we see our maternity portraits?
Our standard editing turnaround is approximately seven business days. After your portraits are prepared, we guide you through selecting your favorites and choosing artwork or digital options.
Do you also offer newborn photography?
Yes. Matt & Shea Photography offers a fully guided newborn portrait experience, allowing families to continue the story after their baby arrives.
How do I reserve my maternity session?
